about
Adrogué is named after a poem by Jorge Luis Borges, in which the memory of a childhood home haunts Borges as an old man. Jen Wang says, “I loved the murky, dreamlike language and the fluidity of time and place in the poem, and I wanted to capture that ambiguity in this piece.”
lyrics
I could never lose my way
Down the highway that wends
Through unformed hills and sleeping stones
To pool in a circle, doubling back, spiraling in.
I don't think I could lose my way
Through silhouettes of oleander and redwood, Cutouts of blackberry and pine,
Over earth, buried richly with forgotten things, Unbound and faltering, back into forgetfulness,
To where the house lies, sleeping,
To where the fog comes in, at the edges of the yard.
The door is an outline, gray and hollow,
Though I can remember so well how it felt
To cross the threshold that my feet are finding now To cross into the house, full of shards of sunlight Reflecting, refracted,
Bright outside time,
A sparkling infinity of all the things we have known: The voices just in the next room,
The words we can almost place,
Vivid flashes in the water, flowing endlessly away.
I know we can't go back
But I could always, I think, find my way
To that house of dust,
Where it waits to be dreamt of again,
Where it returns, without waiting,
To the edges, and fades.
